Your First Compression Sleeve: What We Wish Someone Had Told You
Share
If you are reading this, you may have just heard the word "lymphedema" for the first time in a doctor's office, or maybe you have been living with swelling for a while and someone finally gave it a name.
Either way, we want you to know something right away: you are not alone, and you have more choices than you might think. 🩷
We have been making compression garments here in Dalton, Massachusetts since 2006. Over those years we have talked with thousands of women who were handed a prescription and a beige sleeve and told "wear this every day." Many of them told us the same thing. Nobody explained how it should feel, how to know if it fits, or that it was okay to want something that looked like them.
So here is what we wish someone had told every one of them.
Start with your therapist, not a shopping cart
Before you buy anything, ask your doctor or certified lymphedema therapist (CLT) these three questions.
Bring these to your appointment
What compression level do I need? It will usually be written in mmHg, such as 15-20 mmHg or 20-30 mmHg.
Do I need a sleeve alone, or a sleeve plus a gauntlet or glove for my hand?
When should I wear it? All day, during exercise, during flights?
Your therapist knows your body and your history. Our job is to make the garment they recommend comfortable, well fitted, and something you actually look forward to putting on.
How graduated compression works, in plain words
A graduated compression sleeve is firmest at the wrist and gently eases as it moves up your arm. That gentle step-down helps encourage fluid to move up and out of the limb instead of pooling.
✓ It should feel like
A firm, even hug from wrist to upper arm.
✕ It should never
Pinch, roll, dig in at the top, or leave your fingers tingling.
If you feel any of those things, the size or style may be off. Please reach out to us before you give up on compression altogether.
Measuring is everything
Most fit problems start with a measurement taken at the wrong time of day or the wrong spot on the arm.
💡 Quick tip
Measure in the morning, when swelling is usually lowest, and follow each point on our sizing guide. Fall between sizes? Write to us. A real person on our small team will help you choose.
Sleeve, gauntlet, or glove?
Sleeve
Covers the arm from wrist to upper arm. Every LympheDIVAs sleeve includes our DIVA Diamond Band to help it stay in place.
Gauntlet
Fingerless, covering the hand. It provides compression across the hand only, not at the wrist.
Glove
Covers the fingers to the nailbed with open fingertips, for swelling that reaches the fingers.
Your therapist will tell you whether your hand needs coverage too.
You are allowed to love how it looks
This is the part that matters most to us. When a garment feels like a medical reminder, it often ends up in a drawer. When it feels like you, it gets worn.
A sleeve only helps when it is on your arm.
That is why we make ours in solids for the days you want quiet, and patterns for the days you want to be seen. Every one is made to order in the USA.
Free guide
A little help for the road ahead
The first few months after a diagnosis can feel like a lot of new words at once. Our free booklet, Lymphedema: A Complete Guide, explains the stages, the early signs, everyday risk reduction, compression, and cellulitis in plain language. We'll follow it with a few gentle emails on compression, fit, and paying for your first garment. No pressure and no spam, just the guidance we would want for our own sisters.
With care,
