How to Choose the Right Compression Level: A Guide to LympheDIVAs Compression Socks

If you’re shopping for compression socks and not sure what the numbers mean, you’re not alone. 15–20 mmHg. 20–30 mmHg. 30–40 mmHg. These pressure ratings can feel confusing at first — but once you understand what they mean, finding your right fit is straightforward.

What does mmHg mean?

mmHg stands for millimeters of mercury — the standard unit for compression garment pressure. A higher number means more compression. The pressure is graduated, highest at the ankle and decreasing moving up the leg, encouraging fluid to move upward rather than pooling in the lower extremity.

15–20 mmHg: Mild Compression

The lightest level we offer. Well suited for mild swelling, long travel days, general leg fatigue, and those new to compression wear. Does not typically require a prescription.

20–30 mmHg: Moderate Compression

One of the most commonly prescribed levels. Appropriate for mild to moderate lymphedema, post-surgical recovery in the lower limb, and those who’ve found 15–20 mmHg insufficient. Always confirm with your healthcare provider before purchasing.

30–40 mmHg: Firm Compression

Our highest level, for moderate to severe lymphedema and patients whose lymphedema therapist has recommended firm compression. We strongly recommend consulting your therapist or physician before using this level.

Short vs. Long: Finding your length

The right length is based on a simple measurement: measure from your heel to your knee-crease. If that measurement is under 17 inches, Short is your length. If it’s over 17 inches, Long is the right fit. Your lymphedema therapist may also have a recommendation based on your specific presentation — if you’re unsure, it’s always worth asking.

Still not sure? We’re here.

We encourage you to work with your lymphedema therapist or physician to confirm the right level before purchasing — especially at 30–40 mmHg.
